Cyclists do the double at Armidale awards

20 Nov, 2009 04:13 PM
CYCLISTS took the top honours at the 2AD/FM100.3 Armidale Sports Awards on Thursday night.

Colin MacIvor was crowned the 2AD/APJ Law Senior Sports Star of the Year while Mitch Bullen was recognised as the FM 100.3 Junior Sports Star of the Year at the 10th annual awards ceremony, where NSW Waratahs hooker Adam Frier was the special guest.

MacIvor won the NSW Masters hill climb, with a time a minute quicker over the 5km than his competitors, the state road and criterium titles in the Masters division, the national road race title, also placing second in the criterium and third in the time trial.

That resulted in him being named the national champion of

champions.

Then at the World Masters Games MacIvor won bronze in the time trial and road race.

He was adjudged Armidale’s top athlete from a field of finalists that included national, state and Country representatives including Chris Smidt (canoe kayak), Margaret Carson (archery), Pauline Smith (athletics), Denis Carson (archery), Martin Auster (athletics), Amber Gates (netball), Greg Blanch (athletics/swimming), Jay Porter (lawn bowls), Mike TeMoana (rugby union), Dave Robins (swimming), Ritchie Clutterbuck (lawn bowls), Keith Ellis (hockey), and Rick Ambrose (hockey).

Bullen was selected to represent Australia at the Youth Athletics, returning with a medal.

He was also selected in the NSW team to compete at the Oceania Games in New Zealand, and won various medals at both national and state, individual and team events.

Most recently he broke the NSW Junior time trial record and was named NSW Country champion.

Special awards were also presented to Sarah Brazier, who has been selected in the NSW Special Olympics swimming team to compete at the national titles in Adelaide next year, and Winona Rumble.

She excelled in swimming, breaking school records, some of which had stood for over 25 years, and also excelled in athletics and cross

country.

The junior finalists all received a medallion and were: Brendon Howe (archery), N Dea Rumble (cross-country, swimming and athletics), Dean Farrell (lawn bowls), Tyler Bullen (motor cross), Kayla Wicks (swimming and tennis), James Eccles (soccer), Callan MacGregor (gymnastics, soccer, hockey, touch, softball), Elise Hay (athletics), Ben Norton (shooting), Michelle Wayte (hockey), Kyle Eichorn (hockey), Brittany Sisson (hockey), and Nick Jones (rugby union).

The Armidale Sports Council/Armidale Sportspower senior team of the year was the Armidale Special Olympics track and field team.

The team of six won an amazing 17 medals at the state track and field titles, including nine gold medals.

Three of the team were then selected in the NSW team to compete at the national titles in Adelaide early next year.

The team of the year was decided from the 10 monthly winners, which also included bowls, netball, rugby union, soccer and hockey sides.

The junior team was judged to be the Duval High School boys’ futsal team.

Not only did the boys win the regional titles, they also took the state titles by storm, recording some amazing victories on their way to being crowned the best Under 19 schoolboy futsal team in the state.

That was unfortunately as far as they got to go, with the national titles, due to circumstances beyond their control, being cancelled.

O’Connor Catholic College, New England Girls School, and PLC also had sporting teams recognised among the 10 finalists, along with the New England U17 hockey boys and Armidale Walter Taylor Shield side.

The first awards handed out on the night were the Armidale Sports Council/Newcastle Permanent Contribution to Sport Awards.

All five nominees were rewarded for their long-time contributions with awards: Helen Ray (hockey), Tony Butler (cricket and hockey), Tony Drozdowski (soccer), Mark Creagan (rugby union) and Tony Ward (soccer).
