TENNIS: NORTH West will be playing off for a second NSW CHS Boys’ Tennis Championship title in three years in Armidale this morning.
The Tony Coyle-managed side will face reigning champions Sydney South West in today’s final after both sides won their respective semi-finals in similar fashion.
Sydney South West was too strong for Hunter, running out eight sets to four victors, while North West accounted for Sydney North, also 8-4.
They got off to the perfect start with Daniel Nash (Tamworth High), Michael Wasson (Oxley), Jock Gardiner (Farrer), Jo Teege (Duval), Zac Fielding (Tamworth High), Daniel Clements (Tamworth High), Tyson Peterswald (Farrer) and Joshua Crompton (Duval) combining for a doubles clean-sweep.
Nash and Wasson, and Peterswald and Crompton were both pushed to tie-breakers but came through 6-5, while Gardiner and Fielding edged out their opponents 6-4.
Teege and Clements had the easiest of the sets, conceding just the one game.
Nash (6-2), Gardiner (6-4), Fielding (6-4) and Clements (6-1) then backed up to win their singles, with Nash and Clements unbeaten for the day.
Wasson was also close, just being edged out in the semi 6-4.
They had earlier pipped the defending champions to finish top of their pool (A) with decisive wins over Riverina and North Coast in their final pool games.
Against Riverina they didn’t drop a set and conceded just 25 games for a 12 sets 72 games to nil sets 25 games win.
Nash won his singles 6-3, Gardiner his 6-2, Wasson his 6-2, Teege his 6-nil, Fielding his 6-1, Clements his 6-1, Peterswald his
6-4 and Ciaran Lavers (Farrer) his 6-2.
Nash and Wasson also teamed up for a 6-4 doubles win, while Gardiner and Fielding won 6-2, Teege and Clements 6-nil and Peterswald and Crompton 6-5.
North West then powered past North Coast 10 sets 68 games to two sets 28 games.
Nash (6-nil), Wasson (6-1), Teege (6-1), Fielding (6-2), Clements (6-1), Peterswald (6-2) and Lavers (6-2) all won their singles rubbers.
They had earlier won three of the four doubles with Nash and Wasson getting up 6-nil, Gardiner and Fielding 6-4 and Teege and Clements 6-3.
In the semi-final they finished with 58 games to Sydney South West’s 50.
“Daniel Nash played a great game of tennis,” Coyle said.
“And Jock Gardiner played his part well as No.2. He had a good, solid win.”
Fielding and Clements have also been performing very strongly.
North West won the State title in 2007, with many of this year’s side part of the victorious team.
