FOOTBALL: ARMIDALE United won their own carnival but Scone and Tamworth weren’t so successful when they contested finals in the Armidale United/UNE Soccer Club Over 35 Carnival on the weekend.
Scone and Tamworth lost their finals 2-nil in the heat after a testing two days.
Tony Ward was delighted to be a part of an Armidale United side complete with some Sydney “ring-ins” and some names well known in Armidale.
Barry “Bugsy” Marshall, Gold Coast-based Peter Ward, Ross Williams, Jake McRae and Jack Kliendienst all turned out with Tony Ward in the Armidale United side.
After a surprise and upset 1-nil semi final win over unbeaten favourites Brookvale, Armidale United accounted for Woolgoolga 2-nil in the Wards Australia Paint Supplies Cup final.
“It was a great weekend,” Tony Ward said.
“They had something like 26 teams. I think they only had 16 last year. So hopefully it can be even bigger next year.
“It was very enjoyable too, well organised and well run.”
Scone had won its way into the Hutchinson & Harlow Cup final (for teams 5th to 8th) with a 3-nil semi-final win over Multiple Scoregasms.
Pittwater had ended Glen Innes’ run with a 3-nil win in the other semi and beat Scone 2-nil in the final.
Multiple Scoregasms was an Armidale-based side built around the South Armidale Scorpions club.
Brothers Phil, Garry and Craig Wright all turned out for the Scoregasms along with the likes of Brad Evans, Andy Lennon, Tony Murphy,
Joe Campbell and Tom
Kalinowski.
“Tony Murphy used to be a detective in Armidale,” Phil Wright said.
“He’s now in Coffs. He had a great weekend, as did Joe Campbell, and Tommy Kalinowski made a comeback too.
We’re lucky we had Michael Lord (South Armidale first grader). He became eligible this year and had a brilliant weekend. We would have been in trouble without him.”
Tamworth went into its SportsPower Cup final (for teams from ninth to 12th) after a gruelling extra time game which went to a four-man drop off.
Without a break, the boys in sky blue didn’t have many legs on a field where the long, lush grass didn’t help.
With the likes of Dino Perizzolo, Rob Jeffery, Gavin Thompson, Grant Davidson and Darren MacKenzie, the Tamworth side worked hard. Scott Lutgerink and Glen Gardner also impressed while goalkeeper Craig Dunn was outstanding at the back.
“We’ve just come straight from a four-man drop off,” Darren MacKenzie said.
“Got no legs left. We played these blokes (Broadmeadow Magic) yesterday and they beat us 1-nil then too.”
Tamworth was trailing 1-nil at that stage and a late goal confirmed the Cup win for the Magic.
“It’s been a tough weekend,” MacKenzie said.
“But it has been a good carnival and played in the right
spirit.”
