NORTHERN Inland’s 16s girls’ State Youth League football side opened its account on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over the Hunter Valley at Weston.
It was the girls’ first win in the competition after they registered a 6-0 loss in the first round.
It was mixed results for all Northern Inland sides in round two.
The 13 and 15 boys’ sides had 2-2 draws, while the 14 boys suffered a 6-0 defeat.
The 15 boys were leading their match until the final minute when a defensive lapse led to a Hunter Valley goal to secure a draw.
“Our keeper got his leg to it but it went in just under the crossbar,” coach Darren MacKenzie said.
Northern Inland had fought back from 1-0 down to lead 2-1, thanks to strikes from Tamworth’s Will Kam and Inverell’s Tom Hume.
Kam’s was the best goal of the match, according to MacKenzie.
“It was from outside the 18 – beautiful placement inside the right-hand post,” MacKenzie said.
Their second came “from the boys just knocking it around”.
They created ample space in the box and Hume was on hand to steer the ball home.
This weekend the sides travel to Norths Oval in Armidale for a match against North Coast.
For the players in the 15s side – who hail from Tamworth, Inverell, Guyra and Glen Innes – this weekend is the closest they will get to a home game.
Even training is a big task for them.
“But we still get up to Armidale every Friday night,” MacKenzie said.
MacKenzie said his players still needed to work on their fitness but things were looking good for the round three match.
“The guys played well – they’re starting to fit in with each other,” he said.
“They’ll be right once we get their fitness sorted out.”
