THREE of the region’s brightest cricketing talents are lining up for one last major appointment for the 2009-10 season in Sydney on Monday.
Glen Innes’ Aaron Flaherty, Tamworth’s Andrew Harriott and Gunnedah’s Mat Brady will represent NSW Combined High Schools at the all-schools titles.
Flaherty and Harriott are part of the CHS 1 side for the third year in a row while Brady gets his first shot at this level in the CHS 2 side.
The Farrer Year 11 student was a standout with the bat for North West at the state carnival and was deserving of his chance.
“It was a surprise to get picked,” he said.
“I didn’t expect it.
“I was pretty consistent.
“On the first day I got 46, on the second day I got 50 not out, then 10 not out and then 27.”
That’s an average of well over 50 and he batted at seven in that carnival.
He can bowl some medium pace too, if needed.
“I might get a bowl,” Brady said.
“But I’m just there as a middle order bat.”
It’s been a big year for Brady.
He’s played at just about every level that is realistically available to a 16-year-old.
“I played Gunnedah first XI, for North West and for Central North in the Bradman Cup,” he said.
Harriott is hoping he can produce with the bat for CHS and help it win the title again.
He is there as a keeper and such is his talent with the gloves he has been selected every year since Year 10 and been part of some successful teams.
He is now 17 and in Year 12 at Oxley High.
“It’s my third year,” he said.
“We’ve won it the last two years and we’re pretty strong because it’s (CHS) so big.
“We’ll send a good side.
“It’s a long week and I just hope I can get a few runs.
“I haven’t got any recently.”
Meanwhile 18-year-old Flaherty is another “veteran” of the CHS side.
Thanks to his exploits for Tamworth Colts and first XI, Central North seniors and Colts, North West, CHS and the NSW Under 19s, he has probably been out in the middle more than any other player in the region this season and his prolific run-scoring has only added to that time at the crease.
The carnival runs all week with CHS 1 facing CHS 2 on Friday in the first twenty20 game played at the event after facing the likes of CCC, GPS and CAS in earlier 50-over games.
The best players from all the associations will be selected for the NSW All Schools team.
