FIVE of Tamworth’s six junior cricket sides have made major end-of-season finals.
Tamworth Blues will play in all three Hunter Valley Junior Cricket Council finals at Maitland on February 21.
The Blues’ Under 12s, 14s and 16s all had final-round wins last Sunday to secure their finals berths, Tamworth Junior Cricket Association president Chris Paterson said.
He also confirmed the Tamworth Golds Under 13 and 15 sides had made North West Junior Cricket Association Under 14 and 16 finals.
“The only side to miss were the Tamworth Under 12 Golds,” Paterson said.
“The 12s,13s,14s,15s and 16s are all in finals, although the 15s have to play a semi-final this Sunday after Armidale came into this year’s North West Junior comp.
“It’s a great result for all the sides.”
The Tamworth Blues’ Under 12, 14 and 16s go to Maitland to play Maitland on February 20.
The Tamworth Gold 16s (Under 15s) play their semi- final this Sunday while the Gold 14s (Under 13s) play Gunnedah Under 14s in Sunday’s NWJCA Final at Dick Edwards Oval in Tamworth.
They cemented that final berth with a 117-run win over Narrabri at Cooma No. 5 in Narrabri on Saturday.
Winning the toss and batting , Tamworth Golds made 7-191 and then dismissed the home side for 74.
Opening batsmen James Psarakis (53 retired) and Ryan Hansen (31) put on 88 for the opening stand before Psarakis retired ill.
Narrabri fought back and at one stage had the Golds 6-133 before the Golds’ tail wagged.
Nick McCrohon (21), Toby Fox (21no) and Matt Dunn (11no) all played smart knocks.
Narrabri’s Connor Duncan spearheaded his side’s attack and claimed 2-33 from his nine overs while Toby Nancarrow took 1-25 from his nine and Ethan Wright chipped in with 1-3.
Connor Duncan (11) and Shelley Higgins (10) were the only Narrabri batters to reach double figures as Matt Dunn (3-5), Lachlan Scales (2-13) and Campbell Baker (2-3) combined to dismiss the home side for under 100.
Tamworth Golds coach Terry Psarakis was delighted with the final-round effort.
“It was a good all-round performance,” Psarakis said.
“It was a big ground and, with the rain, the grass was long and made the outfield very slow. 191 was a really good score on that and very
pleasing.
“Narrabri had to win to make the final.”
