TAMWORTH Gold began their North West Junior Cricket Under 12, 14 and 16 seasons with wins at Coonabarabran on Sunday while Quirindi Under 16s had a strong win over Gunnedah.
Batting first Quirindi 16s made 217 off their 50 overs with Will McQuirk (26) and Andy Saunders blunting the attack with a good 55-run partnership, said coach Ian
Stutchbury.
“It set a good foundation,” Stutchbury said.
“The excellent work was carried on by Jamie Flynn (28) and Leigh Stutchbury (57no) with some lusty hitting by Jaryd Maxwell and Cody Tickle closing the innings.”
Gunnedah’s C Rollinson (2-29), K Loughrey (1-33) and A Swain bowled well for a side which fielded well in the hot conditions.
Quirindi bowlers Kieran Brady and Zac Radcliffe then claimed the prize wickets of Sam Wilson and Keegan Loughrey and leave Gunnedah reeling at 3-16.
They never really recovered with Tim Kelly (18), T Fleming (19) and Zac Wheatland playing some good shots.
Leigh Stutchbury made it a fine all round game when he backed up his unbeaten half century with the bat to claim 4-20 as Gunnedah fell for 108.
In Coonabarabran the Tamworth Gold 12s made 5-102 with Matthew Bryant (30) and Luke Hagley (38) rescuing the side from early disaster at 2-2. Coona’s James Wilkes (109), Harley Woods (1-27), James McInnes (1-19), Jesse McElhenney (1-8) and James McEvoy (1-11) all had success with the ball but the bat was a different matter.
Coona fell for 52 with Harley Woods (8), Angus Windred (8no) and James Wilkes (6) the best.
Zac Chmieluk (3-4) was best of the Gold bowlers with Joshua Strange (2-3) and Lachlan Cook (2-4) also picking up multiple wickets.
The Gold 14s also bowled Coona out for 52 after they had batted and made 8-216.
James Psarakis topscored at the top of the order with his 83 coming off 93 balls.
Toby Fox (14), Brad Duprez (12), Tim Painter (19) and Ryan Hanson (12no) also made it into double figures. Nick Inder (2-28 off eight), Edward Wilkins (2-32 off seven) and James Nash (2-36 off nine) all bowled well while Sam Bowden opened with a tight line to finish with 0-30 off his 10 and Luke Michael claimed 1-8.
The Coona 14s also failed to ignite with the bat, Brodie Edmonston’s 24 a lone hand at the top of the order.
The Golds used just four bowlers with Nick McCrohon (2-13), Lachlan Scales (3-12), Ryan Hanson (2-9) and Matt Dunn (3-8) sharing the wickets and taking just 16.2 overs to finish the Coona innings.
Simon Bellamy was the batting star for the Tamworth Gold 16s, striding to the crease at 4-65. Bellamy (41), and Troy Martin (20) added some runs from the lower middle order while Sam Liles (28) looked good at number three.
Coona’s Jack Redden (4-21) created much of the early damage along with Thomas Britton (1-24), Luke Mack (1-23) and Nathan Lucas (2-30).
Chasing 157 Coona was all out for 101. J Michael (23) topscored while Josh Kluff (10), Luke Taylor (11), Thomas Britton (11) and Nathan Lucas (10) all made double figures.
Luke Paterson (3-22) and Bellamy (3-5) returned the best bowling figures while Leo Steyn (2-17) and Josh Holt (1-14) opened up with pace and good line. Troy Martin also nipped in with a wicket.
