Chance to break through

06 Nov, 2009 10:29 PM
TAMWORTH Colts performed well in their debut War Veterans Cup match against Tamworth Blue two weeks ago but after a narrow loss the side has to take tomorrow’s clash with Gunnedah seriously if it to post its first win.

A great effort against a more experienced side in game one was a confidence booster for the youngsters in Jeff Cook’s Colts team, but didn’t earn any points.

“Whoever won the game between the two Tamworth sides was going to have an advantage,” Cook said.

“But we’ve got an important game against Gunnedah.

“They’re going to come here disappointed with their loss to Armidale last week.

“They’ve got some good players and we need to be at our best.

“It’ll be a good game.”

Tim Kensell comes back into the Colts side to add some experience after he missed that game against the Blue while English import Callum Rowe makes his debut.

Nathan Whale has also been called up for the unavailable Cal Roberts.

Apart from playing for much-needed competition points the Colts players are also vying with those from the Blue for any opening in the Tamworth Country Cup side that might crop up.

The Cup side is up against Armidale next week and a good performance from a fringe player might be enough to jag a place in that side.

“That’s what the concept of the Country Cup team side is,” Cook said.

“If someone stands up from either side they’re half a chance of getting a game.

“There are guys who are aware they need runs or wickets if they’re going to play and if they don’t there’s an opportunity for others to come into the side.”

There are several players knocking on the door already.

They will be hoping for a dry track at No.1 Oval tomorrow, which seems unlikely, to show off their skills again.

“The side played well together in our last game,” Cook said.

“I think we should go all right whether it’s a wet wicket or dry.

“I think there’s a feeling around that it’s a good

concept.

“Players are getting an opportunity and a chance to play some good cricket.”

The Blue faces Inverell at Inverell with Brendan Rixon the only inclusion to that side from the one that beat the Colts.
