TAMWORTH people will have the chance to support a worthy cause today, when Colin and Helen Pearce hold a garden wander.
The event is being held to raise money for motor neurone disease, which affects about 1300 people in Australia. All funds raised from the open garden will go to the MND Association of NSW, which was established in 1981.
Mrs Pearce has been organising fundraisers for the disease for about two years, and has raised several thousand dollars at each fundraiser.
“We’ve known several people who have had motor neurone disease,” Mrs Pearce said.
“When our daughter-in-law died from motor neurone disease over two years ago, it really brought the problem close to home, and I started to organise fundraisers.”
Since then, Mrs Pearce has worked to raise funds for research into MND.
“The money is also used for equipment, and helps care for people who have the disease,” she said.
“We hope to raise at least $2000.”
There is no entry fee for the garden, but visitors can purchase plants in terracotta pots, including succulents and geraniums.
Light refreshments will be available for the event, which starts at 10am today at 259 Forest Rd, Tamworth.
