Workers urged to be walkers

03 Oct, 2008 08:44 AM
SLIP on the sneakers and start a healthy routine on the way to work today.

Today is Walk to Work Day and workers are encouraged to walk at least part of the way to work to do their bit for better health and cleaner air.

NSW Cancer Council regional programs co-ordinator in the North West, Natalie Flemming, said it was a good way to increase physical activity, which was part of a healthy, active life.

“Regular physical activity combined with a healthy diet can reduce cancer rates by up to a third,” Ms Flemming said.

If workers live far away from their jobs, they can take part in the day by walking part of the way or taking the stairs instead of the lift – and making this a part of their day on a regular basis.

Ms Flemming said a walk during your lunch break was also a way of including physical activity in your day.

While walking was a very healthy way to get exercise, it was also important to be sun smart while doing physical activity outside.
