Tamworth Regional Council has already begun investigating funding programs to help it build user-friendly facilities for a new taxi rank and a taxi zone in the CBD.
On Tuesday night an amended recommendation was given the green light to move the main cab rank in Fitzroy St to White St.
The council will retain a presence for taxi users in Fitzroy St, with a new two-cab zone to be located further up the street next to the National Australia Bank.
Council is researching government grants to help fund improved facilities including new shelters and seating, communication and phone booths, roadworks, ramps and improved access.
The new works could push the cost to about $45,000. Councillors are hoping to see a start on the new works inside a few months.
The new White St rank will sit between an existing disabled parking spot and 14 metre loading zone and will accommodate six taxis.
The new zone in Fitzroy St will provide better access from the footpath to the roadway.
TRC general manager Glenn Inglis said council wanted better facilities – particularly for the frail, aged and disabled.
The compromise taxi solution won the backing of the council as the best way forward as part of the new beautification project and the design masterplan for the Fitzroy St and Bicentennial Park upgrade.
