TAMWORTH had a brilliant U13s Hockey Championship weekend, collecting a Northern Half State title and two State runner-up plaques.
The title success came in Tamworth where the Tamworth As girls accounted for Western District’s 4-nil in their division 2 final.
At Wollongong, the Tamworth A and B boys were beaten finalists, with the As just falling short in their division 1 title defence, going down to Illawarra 4-1, and the Bs being defeated by Bathurst 3-1 for the division 3 honours.
Tamworth also scored on the selection front, with Chris Ninness, Josh Worpel and Antony Doolan named in the boys’ State side, and Dana Constable, Brittany King and Tegan Resch making the Northern Half-State girls’ squad.
It continued Tamworth’s strong tradition of producing State representatives.
There are currently two on State duties, with Emma Clifton and Lauren Chew, along with New England’s Georgina Morgan, in Canberra for the U18 national championships.
Yesterday they suffered their first loss – 3-2 at the hands of Western Australia.
The Blues were top of the table heading in, after on Saturday defeating Northern Territory 2-nil, but found themselves 2-nil down mid-way through the first half.
