Tamworth school: Teaching respect

04 Nov, 2009 09:55 PM
IT WAS an exciting day in Tamworth South Public School’s history yesterday as it launched a whole-school approach to teaching students positive values.

The Positive Behaviour Learning program is a framework centred around the core value of respect – respect for self, respect for others and respect for school.

The aim of the program is to instil core values like tolerance, courtesy, trustworthiness, compassion and truthfulness from a young age in order to make for a better society as a whole.

It was launched during a full school assembly with special guest, Member for Tamworth, Peter Draper, on hand to witness it.

To celebrate the occasion, the school had decorated the outdoor undercover area with artworks depicting the program’s ocean theme. Posters depicting core

values adorned the area.

Principal Chris Shaw said the program was the most significant initiative he had ever been part of.

“It is a framework for the school to make a difference, a difference in society,” he said.

“Through this, students can stop graffiti in their town, stop violence in the community through the instillation of core values such as respect ...”

He acknowledged that the program’s aims would not be achieved overnight.

“It will take four to five years to make a difference; we are already seeing changes in our school community,” he said.
