Take note of serial numbers in case of theft, Tamworth police urge

08 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
POLICE have warned Tamworth residents to record the serial numbers of mobile phones, computers and other electrical goods which were on the hitlist of thieves last month.

Break-in numbers increased in January, however police say the increase was expected, given the city's population almost doubled during the 10-day Country Music Festival.

There were 55 break-ins to homes, 15 more than in December.

Break-ins to non-dwellings stood at 19 for the month, compared to eight in December.

Police said six of those reports were from caravans and tents during the Country Music Festival, as well as from a restaurant and a bowling club which were broken into.

Ten cars were stolen in Tamworth during January, an increase of one from December.

Three of those thefts were the result of break-ins to homes in which keys were taken.

The city's crime manager, Inspector Phil O'Reilly, said the latest statistics were a timely reminder for residents to take care in securing their belongings.

He said police believed there was still a link between property theft and drug crime in Tamworth and that anyone with information that could help police should contact the Tamworth Police Station.

"I do believe there is a link between drug crime and property theft," Inspector O'Reilly said.

"We'll be continuing our operations to target suspects of break-ins and we urge the community to report suspicious activity.

"We remind smartphone owners that there are applications that can be activated on phones using location services which will assist us in locating the phone if it is lost or stolen. This application is available on iPhones and Android phones.

"In addition to this, the chance of recovering stolen property increases when owners record the serial numbers of their property."

He said police were still investigating the theft of a large number of Britax driving lights from a Taminda business, which was broken into last week. Police believe the thieves may attempt to resell the lights, which were of significant value.
