Support grows for wildlife carers

08 Feb, 2010 11:09 PM
MORE than 2230 people have now joined a Facebook group supporting Nancy and Col Small since the RSPCA removed eight koalas from their Waterways Wildlife Park during a surprise raid last Wednesday.

Members have left hundreds of messages of support and more than 140 photos of themselves and loved ones at the park.

They are also are using the site as a tool to alert other users to media articles, websites and avenues through which they can express themselves.

It is understood that dozens of Gunnedah residents have begun tying red ribbons to their cars as a symbol of support for the wildlife carers.

A collection tin has been placed at the Attunga Store, to raise money to support the couple and the park.

A fund to support the park will be launched today by Gunnedah Shire Council.

The council will kickstart the fund with a $5000 donation.

It is hoped that the outpouring of support shown to Colin and Nancy will continue with donations to the fund.

All monies will go directly to Waterways Wildlife Park to help with future operations and improvements.

Gunnedah mayor Adam Marshall urged the community to rally behind the wildlife carers.

“Support Nancy and Col Small and the Waterways Park just as they have supported our community for almost three decades,” he said.

“Support this great asset in our community and help ensure the tremendous work that Nancy and Col have done by caring for injured and orphaned wildlife continues long into the future.”

Donations can be made at Gunnedah Shire Council’s administration building (Elgin St), Gunnedah Visitor Information Centre, Namoi Valley Independent, 2MO/2GGG Radio Station and the Greater Newcastle Building Society (where the account is held).

Those wishing to make direct deposits may also donate into the account.

Details are: Account name: GSC - Waterways Wildlife Park Community Support Fund. BSB: 637 000. Account No.: 717 534 506.

For years i have been giving donations to RSPCA but it stops here, no more. I have seen with my own eyes the love and care Nancy and her husband give to the wildlife.they have devoted their lives to these animals, hours of love, sleepless nights nursing sick injured wildlife. These koalas are like their children. As far as being stressed i find that hard to beleive, it would be more stressful to be taken away from their home they are used to. Yes RSPCA you have received a complaint, WHY didnt you investigate first and give a warning if there REALLY was a problem. OH right this would make a good Television story, why else did you take along a film crew?????? I will support Nancy & Colin 100%

As a matter of interest I think it would be a good thing now to challenge the RSPCA to show the filming of the raid - let the truth be shown! Allegations have been made by local witnesses of the aggressive manner in which the raid by the RSPCA was conducted. Let's see the footage!

Dear Nancy and Col, I am wholeheartily behind you. I was saddened to hear about the death of the koala. We hope the RSPCA in the future, is answerable to the general public for what they do. I wish you a great day on Saturday with the people helping you. I give my full support to both of you. All the best Janet.
