Rotary recycles books for benefit of less fortunate

THE words “we’re not big book readers around these parts”, it is safe to say, don’t readily apply in Tamworth.

At least 60,000 books, all of which were donated, were sold over the past two weekends as part of the annual Rotary Book Sale.

Early estimates suggest more than $20,000 was raised and while the amount may be a little down on last year, organisers were still happy.

“It’s gone quite well,” Tamworth Rotary member and book sale cashier Alec Noble said.

And there have been a few surprises along the way for book browsers.

“People have been saying ‘I’ve been looking for this book for a long time’,” Mr Noble said.

The book sale is Tamworth North’s “pride and joy”, with the club donating more than $20,000 each year to various charities within the city and beyond.

“The book sale raises the majority of our funds and it is good fellowship,” Mr Noble said.
