Residents protest against housing plan

08 Feb, 2010 10:56 PM
MORE than 50 angry Moree residents protesting against two planned social housing developments were joined yesterday by Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries in a show of support.

Mr Humphries instigated the blockade several weeks ago and has visited on two occasions since, urging the Government to listen to the concerns of the community before continuing with what Mr Humphries believes is a destructive and ill-conceived social housing plan.

“From the start this project has been a mess; family homes were compulsorily acquired and demolished despite strong opposition and an abundance of vacant land in the community,” Mr Humphries said.

He said the projects were being rushed due to the federal government’s Nation Building Economic Stimulus Package requirement to have 75 per cent of the 6300 NSW buildings completed by the end of this year.

“The Department of Housing bypassed councils in order to make deadline, therefore there has been no local consultation, with residents,” Mr Humphries said.
