MEMBER for Tamworth Peter Draper presented Nundle Public School with $2500 on Tuesday.
The funding was allocated to the school by the NSW Environmental Trust to develop an innovative environmental project – Garden to Kitchen to Garden Again.
The program will aim to develop an edible community garden using
sustainable techniques and to teach the students the positive impacts growing their own food has on the environment.
The school will reduce, recycle and re-use their school waste to develop compost for the vegetable garden.
An irrigation system using harvested rainwater will also be installed.
Mr Draper said the outcomes would include an audit of waste in the school and an investigation into the environmental impact of waste, and long-term importance of sustainable practices.
“Nundle Public students will research ... composting and irrigation systems, then ... design a ‘no-dig’
garden suitable for the school’s needs.”
