A YOUNG Armidale couple are dead following a tragic murder-suicide in the city on Wednesday night.
Just after 7pm police were called to a house in Kennedy St, Armidale, after neighbours reported hearing a number of shots being fired.
Upon arriving at the address, police found a 25-year-old Armidale man dead inside the home, with an apparent gunshot wound.
Police said his death was not being treated as suspicious.
A 26-year-old Armidale woman, believed to be his fiancee, was also found inside the home.
A spokeswoman for ambulance media said the woman was found critically injured after suffering a gunshot wound to the head.
She was also said to be in cardiac arrest.
Paramedics administered first aid, and the woman was stabilised before being and taken to Armidale Hospital.
She died a short time later.
A coroner will investigate the deaths but police said yesterday they were not looking for a third person in relation to the incident.
Neighbours reported hearing a number of noises before emergency services staff arrived at the home.
One was quoted as saying he had spoken to a relative of one of the victims.
“She told me that somebody had been shot with a shotgun and then the gun had been turned on the shooter,” the man told the ABC.
Another neighbour told reporters the young couple had lived in the home for about 12 months and had kept to themselves.
“It’s pretty shocking,’’ he said.
“They were quiet, no trouble.”
The woman is believed to have been the manager of an Armidale bakery.
Police said late yesterday afternoon it was unlikely any further information would be released because the case was a matter for the coroner.
