CHANGES made to the Federal Parliament’s Register of Members’ Interests reveal the member for New England Tony Windsor has sold his property Cintra to Werris Creek Coal Pty Limited and then leased the property back.
The federal MP, who has conducted a long-running and highly vocal campaign against coal mining on the Liverpool Plains, sold the family farm for more than $4.6 million – to one of Australia’s largest coal companies.
Politicians are required to update whenever their financial interests change.
Mr Windsor lodged a notification of alteration of interests document to the House of Representatives Register of Members’ Interests on June 20, where he announced the sale of the property Cintra, Werris Creek. He then notified the register on the same document the property Cintra, Werris Creek, had been leased to Windsor Farming Pty Ltd.
Mr Windsor also notified the register of his resignation from a directorship of the Grace Munro Aged Care Centre Ltd.
Werris Creek Coal is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Whitehaven Coal, which has a market value of $2.5 billion.
Over the past five years, the company has operated an open cut coal mine just south of Werris Creek, between Quirindi and Tamworth, extracting up to 1.5 million tonnes of coal for export. The mine is less than three kilometres south of Cintra.
The Leader tried to contact Mr Windsor for a comment but he did not return the call.
