Miners’ village sign of the times

14 Jul, 2011 04:00 AM
The MAC Services Group is expected to lodge a development application for its $10 million purpose-built miners’ village at Werris Creek today.

It is understood few changes were made to the proposed development, which will have 1500 rooms, following concerns expressed by residents at a public meeting held at the end of May.

Changes are understood to have included modifications to a caravan park site to be located within the complex and the entrance to the miners’ village has reportedly been moved so it is set back from the road.

The MAC Group successfully purchased 100 hectares of land along the Gap Rd, opposite the Werris Creek Golf Course.

Council has also agreed to sell the developer land that houses the Werris Creek Sporting Complex, which the MAC Group agreed to keep open to the public, and upgrade during construction of the mining village.

More than 150 Werris Creek residents attended two public meetings hosted by council and three senior members of the MAC group who addressed residents’ concerns.

Liverpool Plains Shire Council mayor Ian Lobsey said initially the development would house between 200 and 300 miners but would in the future grow to house 1500 miners.

The catalyst for the development is the possibility of two big mines opening up .

During the course of the meeting executives from the MAC Group assured locals where possible, they would use community supplies and facilities.

“Residents could see the development would have a lot of benefit for the local community,” Mr Lobsey said. Initial design concept plans shown at the public meeting revealed, in addition to the up-market style miners’ accommodation, the development may also include some tourist caravan park facilities. Each of the 14 x 3m accommodation buildings is expected to house three single motel type rooms and ensuites with central communal facilities.

The MAC Group completed purchase of a 33-hectare site at Narrabri last year for a 150-room village, signing an accommodation services contract with Narrabri Coal Operations.

It is understood the Werris Creek development will look similar to the Narrabri development, however, a spokesperson for MAC said she was unable to confirm any details about the facility.

From small things, big things grow, unfortunately. Mr Keith Ross who is now Director of Gloucester Resources Ltd was instrumental in the setting up of the Werris Creek Mine. He is now exploring along the Avon Valley, within 5kms of the township. Gloucester can now look forward to becoming an industrial region instead of an agricultural one. Gloucester has a beautiful golf course and tourists flock to the caravan park all year. What a shame.

Inapropriate AND Irresponsible.

They tried this at Denman in the Hunter only about 400 workers though. It was STOPPED!!

They have more experience on what the impacts will be.

It is not fair to dump hundreds of workers onto a small rural town. The social unrest, the clashes, the traffic, the overload of town resources. These impacts are real and will change Werris Crk into a wild west town no matter how many sweet promises are made by those trying to find a cheap place to dump their workers.

Like Queensland these Mining camp towns suffer serious unrest. Put it on the mine site.

and another thing.

Tamworth population 42,500

Gunnedah 12,000

Quirindi 3,000

Werris Crk 1500.

How can a small town be expected to survive under the forced doubling of the population by itinerant miners? Surely this can't be allowed to happen. What would the outcry be if this super workers camp was to be forced onto any of those larger towns even with their bigger populations & policing.

Poor Werris Crk. the sacrifical lamb handed over to King Coal for use as a family unfriendly workers camp.

The usual antisocial fun & roads trashed under traffic Kaos.

This is a damn disgrace!!!

and they say they will source goods and services locally. Rubbish, how can any town in the region supply 1500 workers with fresh food and materials on a daily basis. These companies sign national contracts with national suppliers , the stuff is shipped in daily.

Mine and construction workers who inhabit camp accomodation will most probably be too tired to go partying after a days yakka. Add to that drug and alcohol testing of a random nature, and in many cases the willingness to remain employable, to qualify "to be on the next big one," keeps most well and truly in line. There will always be some who will test the limits, but that happens in all industries. Working away from home, loved ones and all other priorities requires a discipline many small minded, small town inhabitants could not fathom let alone endure. Keep it safe all workers concerned.

I hope they build the village to meet the needs of Chinese and Indian workers in the future.

I have now lived in Werris Creek for 2 years and I think that the village is a wonderful addition to a town that once was bustling, but alas is on a downturn. Werris Creek has superior potential and with the village coming to our town, will bring much needed employment opportunities for folk who need a job, including me.. So over everyone knocking potentail.. Werris Creek will be ready, we will make them all welcome.. They bring with them a much needed Caravan Park for visitors, our Stunning Railway Station/Museum is the Pride and Joy of the Liverpool Plains Shire. Onwards and upwards. !!!!!

When did the downturn occure? is that one of the dodgy reasons that Werris Crk should accomondate King Coal's itinerate worker's? I think Werris Crk deserves better than to be overun with a 1500 man worker's camp. You will get your camp and your workers but you will lose your town. Who will bring a family to live in a town where the workers camp outnumbers the town population. It will not be as they promise nothing ever has been when it comes to the Coal rush.

It seems some have the dollar signs rolling in their eyes but this is a boom for a few and a curse for the rest.
