Magazine error highlights country health shortages

TAMWORTH’s Seren-dipity Committee has generated plenty of public interest in its fundraising to upgrade Tamworth hospital’s oncology unit.

The latest attention has come from Australian magazineWoman’s Day.

However, an article featured in the magazine, which is on sale today, incorrectly says the committee aims to establish a radiotherapy unit.

Committee member Sandy Brooks said it was great coverage because it showed the need in country areas for facilities matching those in the city.

However, Ms Brooks said it was unfortunate the article was inaccurate.

“We tried to contact Woman’s Day to let them know the article was incorrect, but it was too late,” she said.

The committee, comprising 12 local women, has been raising money to upgrade the oncology unit so patients receiving treatment can have better, more comfortable facilities.

Ms Brooks said the region also needed a radiotherapy unit but it would require millions of dollars in funding.

“We are concerned there is not a radiotherapy unit here but $3 million to $5 million is needed in order to build one, and that should really be a Government initiative,” she said.
