League stars do the ground work

09 Feb, 2010 10:44 PM
RUGBY league’s biggest stars will be getting amongst it with junior fans across the country this week, with local kids treated to visits from the likes of Origin players Ben Cross, Jarrod Mullen and Steve Simpson.

It’s all part of the now annual week-long NRL One Community Carnival and this year, more than 500 players will be visiting 400 schools from Sydney to Perth, into far north Queensland and even New Zealand.

“It’s an incredible kick-off to the season,” NRL chief executive David Gallop said.

“During the week, thousands of kids will meet their heroes and the season will launch with an historic match between the NRL All Stars and Indigenous All Stars.”

While the carnival officially kicked off on Monday, Sea Eagles players were already in Coonamble on Saturday, conducting coaching clinics and even helping repair barbecue areas at the local weir, damaged in last month’s floods.

Yesterday, Bulldogs players visited two Dubbo shopping centres as well as Dubbo Hospital, while the Sharks will brighten the day for sick kids at Walgett Hospital.

Today, Rabbitohs Kane Morgan, Beau Champion, Luke Capewell and Brendan Barnes are visiting seven schools from Nyngan to Bourke, with a visit to the Nyngan Hospital thrown

in as well.

And in Tamworth tomorrow Knights Scott Dureau, Matt Hilder, Shannon McDonnell, George Ndaira, Mark Taufua, Evarn Tuimavave and Cooper Vuna will join their Origin teammates conducting a skills clinic at Scully Park from 4.30pm and visit local schools in the area both tomorrow and Friday.
