Khan 'announces' news of new gym

26 Mar, 2009 07:57 AM
TAMWORTH-based Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader of The Nationals, Trevor Khan, said yesterday it appeared the State Government was deliberately withholding the announcement of a new gymnasium at Gunnedah High School until a time when they could gain maximum media and political mileage out of the announcement.

Mr Khan said it was high time the needs of the community were put ahead of the needs of the Government in the timing of news on important infrastructure.

“The new gymnasium will come as welcome news for the local Gunnedah High School community and the town in general,” he said.

“It is about time the Government made an investment in infrastructure in schools in our region and I am happy to see Gunnedah High School get a much needed new gymnasium complex.

Mr Khan said had taken a freedom of information (FOI) request to reveal the good news.

“It shows just how political the whole process has become.

“No doubt the announcement of the new gymnasium would have been designed to coincide with a Ministerial visit, yet another hand-shaking and photo taking exercise, at a time closer to the next State election.”

Mr Khan said he would continue to pursue the Government to get more of the missing facts about the new gymnasium, such as when construction will start, when it will be completed and what facilities it will have.

School principal Rod Jones said he was not aware of any announcement for the new gym.

He said he was aware that a design concept proposal was with the Department of Education and Training.

“That’s all I know,” Mr Jones said.

“I’ll be the last to know, but I’m waiting for the good news.”
