11 Feb, 2012 08:15 AM
A BUS driver was killed and at least eight people were injured in a head-on collision near Glen Innes yesterday.

Police, paramedics and the volunteer rescue association were called to the Gwydir Highway, 100km east of Glen Innes where a b-double truck and a coach were involved in a head-on collision.

The male bus driver died at the scene while at least eight adult passengers and baby and a five-year-old child were reportedly treated for minor cuts and abrasions while some were reported to be suffering chest pain and limb injuries.

The Tamworth-based Westpac Rescue Helicopter and the Lismore Westpac Lifesaver Helicopter were called to assist.

Several patients were taken to Grafton Hospital by road ambulance.

The driver of the truck was taken to hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

The Leader had received unconfirmed reports yesterday that the bus involved was from the Country Link coach service.

Detectives from Armidale and officers from the Tamworth-based Oxley Crash Investigation Unit were expected to arrive at the scene about 7pm

The Gwydir Highway between Glen Innes and Grafton was closed in both direction with traffic diversions on place.

Investigators will prepare a report for the coroner into the crash.
