AS THE flood waters recede Essential Energy has issued an urgent safety warning residents in affected areas to remind residents that water and electricity do not mix, and that combined they have the potential to kill.
Essential Energy's regional general manager, Matt Patterson, reminded residents in impacted areas that if Essential Energy has turned the power off to your home or business you must not under any circumstances try and turn the power back on yourself.
"If Essential Energy has turned the power off, and you now think it may be safe to turn it back on, please contact us on 13 20 80 and we will send one of our crews to undertake testing to ensure it can be safely restored," Mr Patterson said.
Residents who have turned the power off themselves need to ensure the flood water has not touched any internal electrical infrastructure, such as power points, switches and switchboards.
"Just because the flood water has gone does not mean it is safe to turn the power back on," Mr Patterson said.
"Residents need to understand that they need to be extremely careful when considering turning the power back on as if they get it wrong they may die.
"Do not take the chance, if you are unsure, or you are not sure how to check, please please don't take the risk."
Local electricians can assist residents determine if it is safe to turn the power back on by determining if the flood water has done any damage to their home or businesses electrical infrastructure.
