THE region’s councils will soon be able to access grants of up to $150,000 from a proceeds of crime fund to help clean up graffiti under a new federal government program.
About $3 million will be made available to councils throughout 2012 to fund projects from local government organisations and community groups to put a stop to unsightly spray painting.
Local councils will be able to apply for grants between $50,000 and $150,000 to invest in clean up initiatives to improve lighting, erase graffiti and introduce CCTV in hotspots in their towns.
The funding will be available for projects that run for between 18 months and two years.
Tamworth Regional councillor Ray Tait told The Leader he was keen to make other councillors aware of the availability of the funding and encourage them to think about what projects could benefit from the funds in the TRC region at Tuesday night’s first council meeting for 2012.
“I think it’s important we start thinking about projects we could implement to benefit from the funding whether it be for lighting in parks or more CCTV,” he said.
“I will also bring the funding to the attention of the crime prevention meeting. I’d like us to get something going so it can get some legs.”
Applications for the grants will close on March 16.
