NARRABRI Shire Council held an extraordinary meeting yesterday to discuss the revelation no airline had tendered to provide the Narrabri-Sydney regulated air route after March 31 next year.
Despite enthusiasm from both Qantaslink and Rex Airlines at the initial stage of the tender process, neither airline had submitted a tender. Qantaslink did, however, tender for, and was awarded, the Moree-Sydney air route until March 30, 2013.
Mayor Robyn Faber said the council was extremely disappointed Qantaslink had decided not to continue its service beyond March next year.
“We believe this is a shortsighted decision, given the 50 per cent growth in passenger numbers over the past six years, and the growing demand for the service,” Cr Faber said.
“Passenger numbers are increasing at 25 per cent per annum and may grow even faster with the transport demands created by the latest coal and gas developments.
“In every area of Australia where coal and gas is being produced, Qantaslink is increasing its services, not removing them.”
Narrabri Shire Council will seek immediate advice from the Qantaslink decision-makers as to why they declined to tender, and ask them to review that decision as a matter of urgency.
A working party led by the mayor will meet with NSW Minister for Regional Development Phillip Costa and representatives of Minister for Transport David Campbell early next week, to seek support with discussions with Qantaslink.
