A BOY has been charged in Moree with rock throwing offences under new legislation.
At 10am on Friday, November 14, police were called to a Gwydir Hwy address in south Moree.
A 15-year-old confronted officers and verbally abused them.
The boy was warned several times about his behaviour and was arrested after a short foot pursuit through nearby scrubland.
The local boy was taken to Moree Police Station where he was charged with intentionally throwing an object at a vehicle or vessel risking safety-T2, throwing a missile at a police officer executing their duty no abh-T2, obstructing or hindering a person executing a warrant, assaulting an officer in execution of their duty-T2, two counts of destroying or damaging property under $2000-T2, using offensive language in or near a public place or school, and resisting an officer in execution of their duty-T2. He appeared in front of the magistrate on Tuesday and was refused bail until January 19.
Barwon LAC Inspector Greg Lamey said there was no reason to have a rock in your hand at any time.
“If you have a rock in your hand you are either going to throw it or do something more sinister with it. The act of throwing a rock at a vehicle is not only cowardly and stupid, it is downright dangerous ... Barwon LAC will not tolerate this kind of idiotic behaviour and it is encouraging to see that the judicial system holds it in the same regard.”
