Bendemeer feels full force of flood

01 Dec, 2008 08:10 AM
BENDEMEER bore the brunt of the floods in the Tamworth Regional Council area with at least four houses inundated with water from the Macdonald River.

Peter Clemson, licensee of the Bendemeer Hotel, was sandbagging his doors when The Leader called on Saturday morning.

He said the last time the water had been higher was in 1962 when the hotel actually flooded.

He didn’t expect the bar to flood on Saturday and said he’d keep on trading if it did.

Down the road at the Pioneer General Store five men from Croydon were waiting to pick up their swags from a nearby camping spot.

Cut off by the floodwaters, they pitched in to help staff ferry sandwiches, teas and coffees to the volunteers delivering sandbags and closing flooded roads.

“We’re going to sit at the general store and meet the locals until the water goes down,” Sam

Nicoletti said.

The town’s police officer was unable to move all his belongings to safety before floodwaters entered his home.

He had been too busy helping others.
