Angels in the wings - Tamworth

06 Nov, 2009 07:54 PM
QUILTS, colour and collectables will come together this weekend in support of local cancer patients and their families.

The eighth annual exhibition convened by The Blue Angel Foundation will be held today and tomorrow at Moore Creek Memorial Hall.

Publicity officer and daughter of the late Wendy Hetherington, Lisa, said more than 60 exhibitors had lovingly sewn more than 200 quilts for display this weekend.

“Support of the exhibition is a way of supporting our local community, as Blue Angel provides financial assistance to families of cancer sufferers,” she said.

The not-for-profit organisation was established in 2003 in memory of her mother.

“When mum was sick, she couldn’t work so we were down to a single wage,” Ms Hetherington said.

“Blue Angel tries to help families when ends don’t meet.”

Since its inception, funds have purchased equipment for the Tamworth Hospital Oncology Clinic, helped with the clinic’s redevelopment program and gone towards the likes of the Tamworth Hospital pool, Palliative Care Respite Centre and Tamworth Wig Library.

Proceeds from this weekend’s exhibition will go towards the financial assistance fund, which will continue to provide help to Tamworth families.

An auction of quilts, woodwork and other items of interest will take place at 3pm today.

There will also be a barbecue outside and live entertainment.

Entrance is between 10am and 5pm daily and costs $6, with refreshments included.
