Alan Jones to host Gunnedah food security forum

09 Oct, 2011 03:00 AM
A FOOD security forum will take place at Gunnedah Town Hall on Wednesday from 11am to prompt communities affected by mining to speak out.

It will be lead by the Mullaley Gas Pipeline Accord, with Save our Soils Liverpool Plains and the Caroona Coal Action Group.

MGPA chairman David Quince said people from across the state were expected to contribute to the conversation, especially in regards to coal and coal seam gas exploration, extraction and mining developments.

A line-up of high-profile guest speakers are expected to attend.

Hosting will be Alan Jones, with Drew Hutton, Bob Irwin and Kristy Ruddock also among the speakers.

“We are combining to promote a united event to highlight the importance of preserving our food-producing farmland and fragile underground water,” Mr Quince said.

“This event will attract primary producers from other areas of the state facing the same issues as this area, as well as people from interstate and metropolitan centres.”

Mr Quince said it was important to protect food-producing regions, which account for about 6 per cent of Australia.
