Football games called off more often than held

Online reader Mayze88 vents their spleen over the latest closure of the new soccer grounds.

THE situation with the Gipps St Sporting Complex is ridiculous.

Football (soccer) on these fields has been called off week-in and week-out after little rainfall. One week there was less than 10mm of rain on the fields and the council closed them.

If these fields needed more time to grow, then the council should have maintained Federation Park and had football play there for another season.

As I said at the start of the season, the fields won’t be ready in time, and obviously they aren’t with the continual cancellations each weekend.

How do the children feel when football is called off nearly more times than it has been on?

How do the parents feel after paying registration fees just for the council to close the fields after a little rain?

The council should have thought ahead and made other areas available for sports if the fields needed more “growing” time.

It just isn’t good enough!

While I agree that there has been far too many cancellations at the Gipps St fields, spare a thought for those of us that play touch football there.

Not only do the new grounds not drain like the old ones meaning more missed games but now we have to put up with soccer players tearing up the ground and leaving huge amounts of rubbish around every week.

Before you complain remember that the grounds were returfed to accomodate YOUR game not ours.

They weren't perfect before but at least they drained well and we could play sooner after rain.

I don't know about you guys but my backyard's a bog. Can only imagine what it's going to be like if the rain that is falling tonight, turns out to be the amount predicted.

Having had to wait this long for us to have decent playing surfaces I'm happy for them not to be trashed.

Regardless of how much rain has fallen a decisions need to be made based on what the bureau is predicting.

I don't think Federation is going to be in any shape to play on tomorrow and not because (of) the Council.
